Everyday

You know you’ve fallen behind when even your mom mentions that you haven’t been blogging. Once again I’ve reached the point where I would say “I haven’t had time” but the truth is I haven’t made time. Emma went to work with me all last week and as fun as that is she puts me behind in what I’m supposed to be doing. Add that to being busier than normal and Ive been leaving work as late as 7pm. By the time I get home I’m either rushing around to get dinner together and spend some time with D or flying out the door to do something else – like glass or grocery shopping. None of which is neither here nor there but blogging is pretty low on my ‘things to do’ list.

A quick recap of the week would read work, vet, work, rain, rain, work, vet, rain, rain, work, glass … and you’d be caught up. Emma got a ‘hot spot’ Thursday that progressed from a thick place in her skin to full blown bloody mess in less than eight hours. On the way to work on Friday we stopped at the vet to have it checked on. We ended up with ointment and (to my surprise) having her staples removed because she’d healed so well. Last night we went to DrJ’s to wish his oldest boy bon voyage (he’s off to Italy for his senior year) and despite the crowd and the noise Emma did really well and she played really hard (and laughed at Duncan when he fell in the pool*).   She’s slept all day today but then so have the forty-somethings so you can hardly blame her.  Neither D or I bothered getting dressed today – hee.

Next week will be more of the same, hopefully with less rain and maybe a little more blogging.  What’s new with you?

* The pool is off limits to dogs due to hair in the filter but one of the kids was throwing the ball for Duncan and as Duncan dove for it the ‘the ground dissapeared’.  Our host was in the pool at the time and was not only not upset with us he was quick to help Duncan find the side to get out.  We are so lucky DrJ is a good friend and I hope we do a good job expressing that to him.

I am on the verge of having an affair. Have you ever just met someone and against all odds and reason you are mad for them? It’s happened to me. I know its wrong, I know its foolhardy, and I know I shouldn’t even consider it but the temptation is so, so strong I cant hardly stop myself. Its happened before and I failed to act and I’ve regretted it ever since. I simply don’t know how long I can resist.

The truth is the don’t come in wide sizes and are unlikely to fit, I almost never get dressed up enough to justify them and nothing I currently own goes with them.  But, be warned, should they ever go on sale I might just own them anyway.  And yes, somewhere in the basement of this blog there is a post exactly like this over a pair of red suede shoes that I adored in exactly the same way but never purchased and even though I never owned them I miss them terribly.

Had I taken the time to blog yesterday I would have said that the weekend was a pleasant mix of busy Saturday and do-nothing Sunday. I still stand by that but given the fact that D and I are both beginning to sound like Barry White sans the sex appeal its possible Sunday’s do nothing was the beginning of our slide into blech. The worst part about being sick at the same time is that neither one of us has much sympathy for the other … the old ‘I’m sicker than you’ game – heh. We’ve no idea where it came from but if you couple it with Emma suddenly having a bacterial infection on her tummy (poor spotty belly is all blisters) and one has to wonder if it’s cold / flu or something else entirely. I will say this, it’s a fast mover and hopefully it will move on as quickly as it arrives. Till then its vitamin C, copious amounts of hot tea, and resting whenever possible.

In other news: Emma had her 5 month check up over the weekend and her last round of puppy shots. Other than her exuberance over food hitting the bowl the ‘puppy’ part of her is nearly gone and she’s more of a ‘little dog’. It doesn’t look like she’ll make 50 lbs after all; probably more like 30-40. Her legs are so long though I think its still possible she’ll be taller than Duncan and her rat-whip tail is already deadly. We go back to the vet in two weeks for new film on her hip. Seriously, I don’t know what we’d do if all four legs worked properly. She’s a wild thing now; she’d be uncontrollable with four on the floor.

In other, other news: I made the flank steak part of this recipe last night and you would not believe how darned good it was! If you never cooked flank steak I’ll offer a word to the wise. That bit about tenting and resting and cutting across the grain and on an angle…very important if you want to be able to chew it. I plan on trying the whole thing as written someday but D is anti-bean so it probably won’t be anytime soon. Instead I caramelized some onions (adding a little of the marinade to them at the end of cooking) and served it wrapped in tortillas. Delish!

And finally, other, other, other news: There weren’t enough students for class this go-around. Meaning: no torch for six agonizing weeks! I may be forced to clean out the garage so I can torch at home. The. Horror.

My day has improved

My craptacular week has greatly improved. Thanks honey!

Golly but its been one of those weeks.  Sunday we made up for a lazy Saturday by cleaning house, shampooing carpets and doing mounds of laundry.  Monday night I grocery shopped, Tuesday was glass, Wednesday I mowed, tonight I trimmed.  All of which left little time to blog in the evenings.  “What no blogging at work?” you ask.  No, not lately as my responsibilities increase my ‘stand-by’ time decreases.  Where I once could blog while I waited on the backup to complete I now have other things to catch up on.  Silly work, interrupting my blogging.

Tomorrow our first storm of the season arrives; we expect mostly rain and maybe a little gusty wind.  The longer I live here the more I understand how people before all this technology knew storms were coming.  There’s the obvious; the wind picking up and bustling around for more just an afternoon.  And there’s the not so expected; the evening light takes on a harsh quality and everything seems rimmed in chrome.  Its pretty and peculiar all at once.

Tomorrow and the weekend are likely to be nothing but rain, perhaps a good time to start another quilt.  What’s on your ‘doing’ list for this weekend?

Whelp, I’ve done nothing but while away the day.  I must be doing it right.  My original thought for the weekend was a big clean.  I’ve been putting it off or doing a half-assed job of it for some time so its well past time it was done.  D spoiled all of that by noting that it had been quite a few Saturday’s since we’d both been home with no where to be and then suggesting that we walk around down town and visit a few antique stores.  Which turned into gallery hopping, a  little lunch at a sidewalk cafe and a quick visit to the hardware store and home by 2 to release the hounds.  D had a nap and I caught up on my Scrabble turns.

I should probably feel guilty but instead I think I’ll just get back at it.  What are you up to this weekend?

I should probably feel guilty, but instead I think I’ll just get back at it.

…no one that reads my blog.  That’s right, the quilt raffle went to a long ago friend that has dwindled to acquaintance.  Well, dwindled to a FB friend that has left one thing on my wall in the last year - a joking message to sell the quilt back to me.   I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about it, but the good news is that the quilt raised a little over $300 bucks and that is ultimately all that counts.

The fish raffle was going well (about 265 last check) but has run into a hang up with PayPal.  I cannot accept money through them for a raffle so if you are still interested in tickets you’ll have to email me for my address or donate directly to the NFT (make sure you put David Kendrick under patient name).  Otherwise I’m very happy with its progress.  Its nice to be able to help so much more than I could have on my own and that’s all thanks you guys!  Fish winners on Friday.

We are wrapping up the money raising activities for my step-brother’s kidney transplant. If you knit be sure visit Laurie’s Art Fire shop; she has generously put everything on sale and marked the proceeds for my step-bro. As a final attempt to help on my part I’m raffling toothsome fish. Tickets are $1 each. Leave a comment telling me which fish you’d like a ticket for and I’ll send you my mailing address. THANK YOU (and thanks to Laurie) for your generosity.

I started to sit down this morning and write a post about how nice it was to be on the cusp of a three day weekend.  How the list of possible things to do was deliciously long and varied.  What could be baked, sewn, or read.  What might or might not get cleaned, or mowed, or fixed.  And then the day shifted into gear and reality stepped in and it was time to go to the vet and to torch and to the grocery store.  Before I knew it the day was over and Emma and I were curled up on the couch dozing through a Pink concert.

Tomorrow, D and friend are heading out to DrJ’s for 4th of July festivities and I will stay home with the four-footeds and finish up April’s quilt, do some cleaning and some laundry.  Not exactly grand plans but good plans all the same.  What are you doing this weekend?

In the last few day’s I’ve gotten lots of questions about the new pup. Today I was lambasted by D’s boss when I called his office. She asked how Emma was and when I answered “she’s a medical nightmare” she flared “That’s what you get for buying a dog from a pet store”. Whoa! Lemme back that bus up a bit. Unlike the pres’s dog, Bo, Emma really is a rescue. Our local, big box pet supply store allows rescue organizations to offer pets for adoption in their store on the weekends. Emma is from one called Forever Pets (if you are quick on the link you’ll see two of Emma’s siblings – they are the ‘retriever / pointer’ mixes). She was more expensive than she’d have been from the local shelter but we did not ‘buy’ a dog.

Since I’m on the subject I may as well clarify. I don’t have a problem buying from a reputable breeder. I don’t have a problem paying a ‘rehousing’ fee to a reputable adoption group. I don’t even have a problem buying a dog from a pet store, if I were very, very comfortable that the dog was not from a puppy mill. Since that’s practically impossible they are far, far, down my list. I look at it this way. Either way your are going to spend the money. Whether you choose healthy dog from a breeder or fixing a rescue dog it’s going to cost you. Sure, I’d hoped Emma wouldn’t quite be the case she is but when I signed that contract she was ours … defects and all.

The other question I get a lot is ‘How’s Duncan”. Well, he’s three shades of green, as you might imagine. You could say he’s somewhere between “Hey, this is fun to play with” and “Get this thing off of me!”. They play ( like crazy wild banshees) and they bicker – Duncan can be a little rough in response to those needle teeth.  Dunc is also a little gun-shy.  Every thirteen seconds its “Emma, NO!” and he’s not entirely convinced we aren’t talking to him.  Emma has peed on practically ever square inch of the house, my office and the yard.  We tag team her, and run her out on a schedule but I think her med’s might be messing with her timing. In fact she walked into the boss’s office today and peed on the floor right next to him *head desk*.  Thing’s aren’t perfect but sometimes I think that’s the way we like it.
